CASIO FX115-MS SCIENTIFIC CALCULATOR WITH 300 BUILT-IN FUNCTIONS Review

CASIO FX115-MS SCIENTIFIC CALCULATOR WITH 300 BUILT-IN FUNCTIONS
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Have used Casio scientific calculators throughout my life. I've had my 115MS for some three years now. I use it for electronics design and I've been constantly amazed at how every special function I ever need is there. Binary/hex/decimal conversions, engineering conversions including metric prefixes (kilo, micro, nano, pico etc. which I find simply indispensable), complex numbers, etc. The CALC function is particularly useful when I want to see how different values will alter the answer to a formula/equation.

One thing that peeves me though is that it takes three keystrokes to store a value in memory (variables). That's cumbersome.

Overall this inexpensive calculator gets a three thumbs up from me. If Casio makes an exact model with added programmability, I think it just might be the perfect calculator for me.

Hewlett Packard HP6S SLR Solar Scientific Calculator Review

Hewlett Packard HP6S SLR Solar Scientific Calculator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This calculator could be one of the very best scientifics sold by ... but it is not. In fact, it is not best for the price, even.
The best scietific is the Hewlett Packard 32Sii but it costs near to 60$ U.S. which means they are not a `give to the kid to take to school' item. Being the `nerdly grand unki' I get to help all the school-agers with their math homework. I agree with the math teacher, here, that this is an `O.K.' calculator but given the present shipping-cost addition to this calculator I suggest one would be better off buying the algebraic entry Hewett Packard 30S or [even] the Texas Instruments 34 II.
Somehow the `RPN' or postfix entry system is thought of a `hard to learn'. The kids here all use it, there are several Java based RPN calculators on the WWW but this calculator doesn't have RPN. If it did I would buy several. Without RPN I cannot even highly recommend this well built fairly easy to use [but no kid likes the siff rubber keys, calculator.

HP 9G Scientific Calculator Review

HP 9G Scientific Calculator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The HP-9G is the smallest graphing calculator in my collection, roughly the size of a standard non-graphing scientific calculator. The keys have a solid feel and you can adjust the screen.HP also sends two extra batteries with the calcualtor.
Here are some pros/cons:
PROS:
* Very lightweight, for the days you don't feel like lugging around larger calculators
* Distribution functions (normal curve), fractions, base calculators
* Gradient mode (for those of who like to measure angles in gradients)
* Programming available (only 400 bytes though)
* Conversions and constants
* Stat regressions include quadratic regressions
CONS:
*Hard to get two equations graphed at the same time; only trace function available
*Doesn't readibly handle complex numbers (so you'll have to compensate when solving quadratic equations -- the instructions have an excellent example)
*No derivative and no integral function (this why this calculator only got four stars, I consider these two functions vital)
Texas Instruments equivalent:TI-36X with function graphing and programming capability.Worth it if you can get this discounted (thank you Amazon! :))

HP HP48GX RPN Expandable Graphic Calculator Review

HP HP48GX RPN Expandable Graphic Calculator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For a serious electronic engineering student in his senior year in college, calculations extensively revolve around converting units including bases as well as vectors.Compared to it's competitions from TI, it is such a no nonsense super-powerful engineering calculator that even the TI-92 doesn't come close to what this 48-GX can do. Entering numbers in RPN format may be quite tricky at first, but after about 4-hrs later, I came to prefer this format over the algebraic one.RPN totally eliminates the need of parenthesis. Algebriac fans can do algebriac entry and/or display too.It has a massive expendable equation library, so there is no need to carry around a ton of formula sheets.I also own a TI-85 and a CASIO FX-115W. Other than not being able to graph, the little $20 CASIO is much stronger and capable than the TI.It can do integration, derivatives, and can easily convert bases (HEX, BIN, DEC) and vectors (POL, REC). Up until I bought the 48-GX, I only used the CASIO.Now I don't have to use the CASIO anymore.I did some comparisons with my friends and found out that this HP calculator has all the ability of a TI-89 and a CASIO FX-2 as well as the usability of a CASIO-FX-115W, in addition to many more features, including easy expendable memory using cards which can be used like floppy disks to store infinite data, alarm clock, dnld and play music, x-fers to other 48-G/G+/GX by means of infrared light, symbolic calculations that can be converted into a numeric answer in one step, add/sub/mul/div polar and rectangular formats together in the same step, and don't forget the UNDO button when something goes oops. This is only to mention a few. It comes with an intro manual, and a very good comprehensive manual. If you are an engineer or a serious engineering student, one day alone with the 48-GX is all you need to famaliarize yourself with it, and chances are you'll never go back to a weak and overpriced TI again. If you don't need 3D analysis, HP-39G or CASIO FX-2.0 is recommendable, which are equal to TI-86.If you don't need graphing, CASIO FX-115W is a good choice.

I have been a big fan of HP calculators for about 25 years now, and haveabout 15 of them in my collection. The HP-32SII is the best-designedcalculator they have yet made. Some of the upper-end models are a bit muchand complex to use, while some of the lower-end models use algebraic logicand are lacking in some commonly needed features. The HP-32SII is justright -- enough features to make it very useful, while not beingoverdesigned. It's easy to program, and its RPN continues to be one of myfavorite features. This is the calculator I use for scientific use on adaily basis. You won't be disappointed with this one.

HP 12C Platinum Financial Calculator Review

HP 12C Platinum Financial Calculator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been using the HP12C for about 20 of the 25 years it has been around.I love the calculator, and this is why I have used it for so long.I would recommend a purchase of an HP 12C to everyone.I also recommend purchasing the HP 12C instead of this anniversary edition.I only have a couple reasons for this.
1) The keys of the anniversary edition do not respond as well as on the regular HP 12C.For example, when I turn on the anniversary edition, I have to check to make sure it actually turns on.
2) The quality of the anniversary edition is just not on par with the regular HP 12C.For example, the screen on the anniversay edition is already getting scratched up.I have a twenty year old and a five year old HP 12C, and neither of them has any scratches on the screen. Also the keys are just not as solid and they don't have the nice tactile feel of the regular HP 12C.The anniversary edition just feels cheap.

So I would recommend skipping the anniversary edition for the regular HP 12C.

HP 35s Scientific Calculator Review

HP 35s Scientific Calculator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am a diehard RPN and HP calculator fan.I bought this calculator for the PE exam.HP calculators I've owned include HP41c, HP42s, HP12c, HP17BII, HP19BII, and HP33s.The HP35s is basically an HP33s with most the ergonomic design flaws and quality issues of the HP33s fixed, along with a few added enhancements. It's what the HP33s should have been in the first place. But, along the way, it also introduces a few design flaws of its own.

Obvious pluses:The keys on the HP35s feel almost like the ultra high quality keys on the HP41c, not entirely there because the ones on the HP35s are flatter and have less travel distance, but very close. However, unlike those on the HP41c, some of the secondary colors on the keys are only painted on.How long would the paints last?It comes with a super nice semi-rigid vinyl case. The LCD display is fragile, but it seems to be dust-proof and has excellent contrast. The built-in metric/imperial conversions and constants library are also nice. One major enhancement over the HP33s is the ability for a program to refer to a line number instead of a label name during conditional branching. This feature allows the writing of programs that don't use up a lot of the precious program labels. The equation solver is quite powerful. It comes with built-in equations for solving 2x2 or 3x3 simultaneous equations.

Obvious minuses:

There are only 26 single alphabet program labels and only 26 variables, severely limiting the number of programs one can store, considering the somewhat large 30kBmemory available(the HP42s only has 8kB).The manual has a good number of useful programs, but in reality one can store only a few of these programs on the calculator at a time due to the 26 program label limit.I can store more programs on the HP42s even though it only has 8kB of memory. In actual use, most of the 30kB on the HP35s will go untapped.

It's a shame HP chose not to include multi-letter alpha-numeric capability as they did on the HP41c and HP42s.Instead of labeling a program that calculates the time value of money using a single letter such as "T", I'd much rather be calling the program "TVM" or "MONEY" or something easy to remember. The same one-letter restriction applies also to variable names. The listed battery life is on the short side. Two hours of use per day will last the batteries only about 9 months.

Whereas the HP42s offers four types of curve-fitting and has capability to choose one with the best fit, the HP35s offers only linear regression. Also, unlike the HP42s, the HP35s doesn't have any built-in matrix capability to evaluate determinants, inverses, although it does have built-in 2x2 or 3x3 simultaneous equation solving ability as mentioned earlier. You can program all these missing capabilities in but you'll use up many of the precious 26 program labels in a hurry.

The STO key which I use very often is now subordinated, requiring a shift key, whereas the "Mode" key which I seldom use is primary.

The display has much more glare than other HP models I've owned.

Although I will almost never use the algebraic mode except when writing equations, I must mention that its implementation on the HP35s is clumsy. On other algebraic calculators I grew up with, the number precedes a function key (such as COS, 1/x, log) and the function is executed as soon as the function key is pressed. In other words, even though they are algebraic calculators, their function keys work in postfix or RPN mode.

The key sequence is

45

COS

The value of 0.707 is displayed as soon as the COS key is pressed. It's very simple and intuitive. This is also how the functions work on the HP33s.But, surprise, this ain't how it works on the HP35s!

On the HP35s, you have to start by first pressing the function key and then punch in the number and then press the Enter key to get the value.

The key sequence is

COS

45

ENTER

The ENTER key works as the equal sign key in algebraic mode on the HP35s.Hitting the ENTER key now becomes mandatory to get an answer from just about any operation.Although this peculiar algebraic approach may make sense when writing equations, it's highly cumbersome when doing calculations on the fly, especially for someone used to the keystroke efficiency of RPN.

I sometimes scratch my head trying to figure out why for the last 10-15 years HP kept churning out mediocre calculators, with each new one worse than the previous one.Why mess with winning designs and dumb them down to the level of TIs and Casios?Yes, the money is where the masses are and the masses are the high school and college crowd and they use predominantly TIs and Casios. Then it dawned on me that the sales execs, designers, programmers, engineers also have to somehow justify their existence by rolling out new models and discontinuing older but superior models. The HP35s seems to be a step to halt the march toward mediocrity.Does it succeed?Yes, mostly.Although the build quality is good, it certainly could have been designed better.

Even though the STO key is now subordinated, the HP35s fills the need for basic everyday number crunching due to its ergonomic form factor and ease of use combined with a reasonably rich set of functions. The HP50g fills the need for heavyduty scientific/engineering use but is too clumsy for everyday basic number crunching.

I'm sure as I use this calculator more, I will see more of both the pluses and minuses. And, if I were to rate this calculator in comparison with any Casio or any TI, I would give it 10 stars if I could. But I rate it in relation to what I expectan HP calculator should be and so I rate it 4 stars. If the HP35s came with more program labels and variables than just 26 of each (A to Z), multi-letter alpha-numeric data entry capability, matrix capability up to [5x5], 4 types of curve fits and best of fit, primary STO and RCL keys, I would rate it 5 stars.
